When it comes to portraiture, Joe specializes in casual, on-location photographs. He likes to work with subjects in their own environments so they are comfortable and relaxed. This results in thoughtful and intimate portraits that bring out the true character and personality of the subject.What does 'casual portraiture' mean? For Joe, it means working in a way that is most comfortable for each subject. Whether the goal is a formal portrait with studio lights and a backdrop, or a more 'environmental' portrait that shows the subject in a setting that is important to them, Joe seeks to make each shooting session as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.
A common assignment for Joe is to create images that tell a story about a subject. The point of the assignment could be their field of work, or their accomplishments. For example, a magazine (either print or web) might decide to profile an individual who has achieved something extraordinary in their field for an upcoming cover story. As soon as Joe gets the call, he begins to research the subject, their achievements, and their field of endeavor. Sometimes the magazine asks Joe to work within specific guidelines on the composition of the photo, other times Joe is asked to develop the concept himself. Either way, Joe's attention to detail, preparation, and professionalism mean that not only will the images be fresh and dynamic, but the magazine will receive verticals and horizontals of each concept so that they have the freedom to use any concept as the cover or an inside double-page spread.
When doing a more formal portrait shoot, Joe can shoot so that each shot appears in real-time on a 17" laptop. This allows the subjects to review their portraits as Joe shoots, and thus be confident that their portrait looks exactly the way they want it to look. It also allows subjects to touch-up their hair, makeup, and clothing so that everything is just so.
